This is just despicable. On Thursday, March 22, officials at Burlington Township High School enlisted the help of two local policemen to carry out a mock ‘hostage situation’ drill at their school. The drill invoked disapproval from Christian students as the student body was told that the alleged gunmen were “members of a right-wing fundamentalist group [...]

Boing Boing: Steven Pinker on the History of Violence If the wars of the twentieth century had killed the same proportion of the population that die in the wars of a typical tribal society, there would have been two billion deaths, not 100 million. Enta No Kamisama (The God of Entertainment) is one of my new favorite shows that I’ve found on TV in Japan. You may know it from this clip where the guy changes his clothes in seven seconds. Or from my post yesterday with the man & woman on the phone. If you sift through the google-translated [...]

Excerpt: Music-themed microworld The Lounge now offers virtual currency called "Creds" and a selection of virtual clothing. Creds are currently available only through contests designed to increase participation and membership in the virtual world. Lounge-maker Doppleganger is entering interesting territory here: As soon as a virtual economy is introduced, the cultural and social systems seem to change quite a bit. I’m always a fan of clips that give us gaijin a peek into Japanese culture. While I’m certain this video is totally over the top, it’s pretty interesting to find out that the Japanese have (or most likely had) telephone clubs which I imagine are kinda like our datelines. The comedy isn’t incredible but thanks [...]

Excerpt: I'm doing some early research around the concept of "storyworlds," a term I need some schooling on. I've got my own ideas about what the term means and how it could be applied, based on previous game and cross-media work, but I'm looking for earlier work (or at least higher-profile work) in this area. So far, I've got Hamlet on the Holodeck to re-read,… Tagged: Culture Diary Education Places

A wonderful Circus of the Spineless -- #19 to be precise -- is up at Burning Silo. Check it out here! And if you're hungry to be a blog host, we have an opening to host the April edition. Just drop me an email here.Itching for the NCAA final tonight. After an eight straight win in the beginning, and the heady rush of being ranked number one (with thousands of others) among the FB Global pool of several million, i suffered through not getting my first round upsets, and dealing with the ones that did happen. Duke cost me the most, Texas comes in a close second. At least the Ags made the most of their run (whoop!). Anyway, i managed to not ever get below 75% and that eventually apid off. I picked three of the final four (Texas was my miss), and am on target with[...]

Yesterday morning was funny. Jonathan and his household were trying to get tickets for Glastonbury and had friends descend on the house at half eight to prepare for the 9am game of hungry hungry hippos that seems to happen every year. Shouts of "I'm IN!" woke neighbours and scared birds out of their trees as other housemates rushed to pass their credit card details to one another by increasingly insecure methods.I didn't like the way Glastonbury wanted your personal details whether or not they were going to give you a ticket, so I didn't try to join the frenzy, but it was quite cute to watch Jonathan's delight when he got tickets, then his slight moral quandry when I asked which weekend it is, and it's my birthday. Anyone want to be a stand-in boyfriend f[...]
