You may have heard of Somali Muslim cab drivers in the Twin Cities refusing service to passengers who carry alcohol. Apparently this practice isn't common in other cities or from other Muslims. The conflict is between the right to preserve one's religious convictions on the job and the right for customers to not be discriminated against. Should the anti-discrimination laws protect the Somali drivers, or should they protect the customer? This "problem" was created of course, by the law, not the market. Anti-discrimination laws do not exist in free societies, because freedom of association is one of the cornerstone freedoms. If we converted to a free society tomorrow, cab companies could fire these cab drivers who refuse passengers carrying alcohol, or for any r[...]

Sean Penn wants to know how, if the President’s daughters support his policy in Iraq, they dare not be in uniform.Hmmmm.On his ‘logic’ (I’m being generous) everyone who thinks we’re doing the right thing in Iraq ought to be in uniform. Of course, that won’t leave too many here doing the work that yields the paychecks from which come the tax revenues which will pay for this war, and everything else the federal government does. It won’t leave too many here buying tickets to Sean Penn’s movies, or anyone else’s.I said I was being generous. Actually, there’s precious little logic in Penn’s remark on that point. How would it really work out if you could not assert your support for an activity unless you could actually participate in that act[...]

My family has owned a delicatessen for about 35 years. During the mid to late eighties, one (or sometime 2) of the most important items in the store was the arcade game(s). My dad knew one of the arcade distributors in the area, so he would rent the games as a favor both to his [...]

I’ve seen some game related cakes in my time, but this one takes the …well, you know. Made by the wife of a Rockstar Vancouver employee, she says it was made by request from a Rockstar team that needed to “take it to the next level.” Is this a hint of things to [...]

Jesse Ives adds to a post with this comment The “Game of life is a serious one, and goals can be important. Of course that’s one of the problems people are facing; a lack of goals. I’m guilty of it myself, but that’s neither here nor there. If a person chooses a path often they can’t [...]

Stephen Greenblatt on “Shakespeare and the Uses of Power,” from the New York Review of Books. The best thing in the April 12 issue, though, is Hayden Pelliccia’s “Let Virgil Be Virgil,” which reviews the new Aeneid translations by Robert Fagles and Stanley Lombardo. (Maybe I should be more circumspect about claiming that the Pelliccia [...]

A Gears Of War tournament in Fort Collins, Colorado got an unwanted visit from police after an ejected and dejected gamer called the fuzz to complain that he had been thrown out of the tournament. The police showed up and realized that an illegal operation was going on and shut things down without issuing any fines. Why was he thrown out?

Sometimes I despise Liberals more than Conservatives, and sometimes vise versa. I believe it is whichever side who holds the double standard, who doesn't apply a principle consistently, that really makes my blood boil. To kill in the name of God may be irrational and stupid, and for that very reason those who condemn kiling in the name of God, but then kill in the name of Freedom and Democracy, are worse. It is wrong to throw people in jail for homosexual acts (which few even on the Right advocate), but it is worse to throw people in jail for merely criticizing homosexuality (which many on the Left, especially in Europe, advocate). It is wrong for liberals to have the federal government fund sex education and teach "safe sex," but it is worse for conservativ[...]

Quite a while ago I made up a wish list of songs for the upcoming 80's Edition of Guitar Hero. This time I'm making list of new features I'd love to see in the next iteration of one of my all-time favorite games.
