Surviving the Blizzard of 2007 and "historically significant nor'easter"

Blogged From at 15. Feb 2007 12:02 under vermont, snow, burlington

When the Burlington Free Press reported on Tuesday that the National Weather Service was saying that we were going to have a "historically significant nor'easter", I made sure to go out and fill up the gas can for the snowblower. I hadn't fired it up for most of 2 years since the last winter we were in Ottawa, but it seemed to be prudent to have some gas on hand... and sure enough, last night I was firing up the beast to clear out snow which had drifted in some parts almost up to my waist. Snowblowing in wind... not a particularly fun experience. I don't know what to equate it to so that you all in other non-snowy parts of the world could imagine it... Just think about it: temps down around 5 degrees Fahrenheit, fierce wind and still tons of snow coming[...]

Confessions of a Linux Turncoat, Part 6

Blogged From at 14. Feb 2007 17:55

I've been thinking about switching distros already. From what I understand, my computer's hardware specs are better than those of some people who manage to use Ubuntu, but my desktop performance is still marginally sluggish to badly slow at times. In other words, it's marginal for my liking. And, of course, the YMMV factor may be involved. So, I've been thinking about switching to Xubuntu (I'm actually posting this while booted from a live CD of Xubuntu 6.10), as I mentioned the other day, because it uses the XFCE desktop environ which is comparatively light compared to GNOME.I should be able to leave Ubuntu on my computer and instead install the Xubuntu desktop environment on my computer using Synaptic, and then log in under an XFCE session rather than a G[...]

newLISP - LISP reborn as a scripting language

Blogged From at 12. Feb 2007 18:26 under newlisp, programming, scripting, lisp

I freely admit to a fascination with languages... both of the human kind as well as the programming kind. On the computer side, I'm particularly partial to scripting languages that let you easily accomplish simple tasks... hence my long interest in all things python (although I haven't written much python code in a few years). I've also toyed a bit with ruby... not much, but enough to see the power there and know that if I were doing serious web programming I'd definitely check out the Rails framework. So there I was reading the most recent 2600 issue that I had picked up at a local bookstore (which all good security folks should read)... and I suddenly experienced a major trip to the past with an article all about "newLISP".You see, like most university stud[...]

Confessions of a Linux Turncoat, Part 5

Blogged From at 11. Feb 2007 03:04

I decided to break down and get a Linux book, and opted to get Linux Complete. I opted for it over Linux for Dummies basically because a quick thumbing through of that one left me with the impression that it was mostly "this is how you navigate your GUI" type stuff. I can navigate the GUI. I need to know how to navigate the command line and do all that geeky Linux stuff. Still, in the future I might think about getting Ubuntu for Dummies.Second, I've finally managed to install from my first Tarball. It happened to be Songbird. From the Songbird website:Songbird™ is a desktop Web player, a digital jukebox and Web browser mash-up. Like Winamp, it supports extensions and skins feathers. Like Firefox®, it is built from Mozilla®, cross-platform and open [...]

A wonderful day of curling... (in Vermont!)

Blogged From at 11. Feb 2007 01:50 under vermont, gmcc, curling

Had a wonderful morning curling with other members of the Green Mountain Curling Club. It was a bit different because we had three teams away at bonspiels: two teams at a bonspiel over in snowy Rochester, NY, and one team up at a bonspiel at the Border Curling Club in Stanstead, Quebec. However, those three teams (12 people) included most of our more seasoned curlers, leaving a few of us left with some experience... and then a whole load of newer curlers. We had a great amount of fun, though, and it was neat to see some of the newer players who have always been at lead or second getting the chance to play third (and finding out how enjoyable that side of the game is). All great stuff... our season is winding down, though. Only one more Saturday of regu[...]
