Joshua Bell in the Subway

Blogged From darren at 08. Apr 2007 20:04 under Music, Media, classical music, experiment, joshua bell, violinist, washington post

Via Neatorama, I just read a lengthy, erudite, fascinating piece about an experiment in art and fame: Three days before he appeared at the Metro station, Bell had filled the house at Boston’s stately Symphony Hall, where merely pretty good seats went for $100. Two weeks later, at the Music Center at Strathmore, in North Bethesda, [...]

Holy hydrogen - that was close

Blogged From at 08. Apr 2007 19:16 under Object, Object

I know it's not nice to laugh at other's shortcomings but it's difficult not to be unduly amused by our President's technological ineptitude. This time it was Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally who rescued our boy from a potentially serious blunder. It seems Ford was doing a demo of their new hydrogen-electric plug-in hybrid on the White House lawn last week and Mulally was trailing our Dear Leader at a respectful distance, when he noticed someone had left a live plug lying near the fuel port at the rear of the car instead of the electrical supply at the front. Immediately recognizing the potential for disaster, Mulally's quick thinking no doubt saved the President, and the bystanders lives, but also a good portion of the White House real estate."I just though[...]

Politics Collide With Iraq Realities

Blogged From RLR at 08. Apr 2007 14:21 under News, Iraq War, Politics, Opinion, Media

From The Washington Post By Thomas E. Ricks There are two Iraq wars being waged, according to military officers on the ground and defense experts: the one fought in the streets of Baghdad, and the war as it is perceived in Washington. Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, who took over as the top U.S. commander in Iraq in [...]

News Roundup 4/7/07

The Social work academic program at Missouri State University got the worst evaluation its president has ever seen of a program. What alerted the administration that there was a problem? When a Christian student refused to complete an "assignment" to send a letter to the Missouri legislature requesting that gay couples be allowed to foster children. The lovely and peaceful Iranians seemed to not have treated their British captives very humanely after all. In an attempt to violate as many provisions of the Geneva Convention as possible, they lined up the captives (bound and blindfolded), placed them against a wall, and faked their executions. How nice. Finally, a lesson in media bias via Powerline blog. In one "news" story, the world's foremost expert on h[...]

Pundits pile on Pelosi

Blogged From at 07. Apr 2007 20:30 under Object, Object, Object, Object

It's no surprise that Bush's few remaining true believers, and the steno press that breathlessly reports their every word verbatim, have worked themselves into a frothing hysteria over Nancy Pelosi's trip to Syria. It beats the heck out of focusing on the administration's many glaring failures. One might think even they are tired of hearing themselves mouth the same empty platitudes about the "signs of success" of Bush's failed foreign policies. Their fatigue is almost palpable as the echo chamber empties and even stalwart supporter Fred Barnes can't seem to muster his former enthusiam, as evidenced by today's half-hearted rehash of yesterday's RNC talking points on Nancy's trip. Yes, we can all agree that it's the President's perogative to make foreign poli[...]

University Boat Race

Blogged From at 07. Apr 2007 17:32 under media

The University Boat Race can be a viewing highlight of the year.Having wrestled the TV rights away from the BBC, this is the third year of ITV’s coverage. Gone are the hours and hours of build-up that Grandstand used to broadcast and the pre-race documentaries following the teams.Gone too is the proper coverage of the reserve race, which starts thirty minutes before the main event ... a useful warm-up for the TV audience, getting them used to the course and the commentary terminology. Boo hiss! With Formula 1 deemed more important, big-hitter Steve Rider (another ex-BBC asset now appearing on ITV) is stuck in Malaysia, leaving Mark Durden-Smith as a very competent anchor for the coverage. (While F1 features prominently on the ITV website, The Boat Race get[...]

Neocons Foiled - For Now

Blogged From at 07. Apr 2007 15:35 under Object, Object, Object, Object, Object, Object, Object, Object

So much for the rumored Good Friday attack on Iran that had been attributed to leaks by Russian intelligence sources. The week after the escalating crisis after the neocon bait of 15 British sailors was snapped up the attack plans will have to be put on hold after the Iranians shocked the neocons with Wednesday's surprise release of the 'hostages'. This has to but a king sized burr under Emperor Bush's saddle and hell hath no fury like madmen scorned, this really stings the war party and their extremist right-wing Israeli cohorts and they will undoubtably regroup to launch some other bogus provocation or false flag event but for now they are sulking and licking their wounds. The release of the sailors was a public relations coup for Iran and a serious poke in[...]

It’s for 20/20 and who knows whether it’s legit or just a ploy to make gun owners look bad, but from the ABC News website: April 6, 2007 — Have you ever defended yourself from a crime in your home, in your business, or in public by using a gun? Perhaps you warded off a potential [...]

VA: AG Against Roanoke Times’ Anti-Gun Gambit

Blogged From Jeff Soyer at 07. Apr 2007 13:11 under Media

From the Virginia Pilot: Attorney General Bob McDonnell cautioned the State Police against allowing public access to a database of people with permits to carry concealed handguns. In an opinion released Friday, McDonnell acknowledged the state’s Freedom of Information Act does not grant the State Police permission to deny requests for information in the database. However, the [...]
