I Few terms convey less meaning than “futurist. What exactly is a futurist? What does he do? The definition, so far as I chose to apply it, is simple: a futurist looks at the present, at human behavior and human tendencies, to imagine how these trends develop. This is less science than [...]

As I’ve done a few times on our trip, I’d like to get a little geeky and provide our experiences with mobile networks, Internet access and mobile blogging across regions of the world. We try to buy a local SIM card and experiment with the local networks via prepaid mobile phone plans, when reasonable. I cannot vouch for the completeness or accuracy of this information – it changes quickly and my perspective is one of a traveler. I. Everything Must Go! It’s merger season in Australia. Everything must go! Just moments after the new media ownership rules received the Governor-General’s royal assent, James Packer sold off his family’s crown jewel, the NINE NETWORK – consistently Australia’s highest-rated television broadcaster since its inception, fifty years ago – along with a basket [...]

Qualcomm, says its buying a wireless startup called Qualphone for $18 million. Um, talk about a company that seems built to flip to the Qualcomm buyout machine. Not just the obvious name, but the two companies are both based in San Diego, California. We didn’t get a chance to talk to the companies about the [...]

This is a fun Idea. WhereIsHere.net, when it is finished, will allow you to take a picture of a sign or written material with a camera phone, upload it to the site (with the specifications of what language you wanted translated to) and let the WhereIsHere community take a crack. I would hope that when it is a completed the translated message would then be delivered to your phone by SMS or WapPush. Its a a sort of social networking version of the technology that Neven Vision, the company recently acquired by Google, demonstrated last January. Provided this has a large enough community it could really take off. Technorati Tags: google, neven vision, signs, whereishere, wppush

AirG, a Vancouver-based mobile social network provider, says it has hit the milestone of 10 million unique users, growing from 7 million users just a few months ago. Unlike social networks like MySpace and Facebook that have mobile services, AirG has no PC-based network, and works exclusively through a mobile phone interface. This approach has allowed [...]

At the Linux World conference in downtown San Francisco this week, the world’s leading cell phone manufacturers, Nokia and Motorola, took a decidedly different approach to embracing the Penguin. Motorola took the stage – Nokia chose a back seat. Motorola played up an aggressive strategy proclaiming it hopes to one day have more than half of [...]
