Your tax dollars at work — two national institutes funded a study to determine how valuable "faith" is in stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS:The study, conducted by the California-based RAND Corporation, concludes that HIV-positive people who say religion is an important part of their lives are less likely to engage in risky sexual behavior than others with the virus that causes AIDS. One lead investigator for the study said moral beliefs and membership in a faith community might explain the survey's results.Moral beliefs may indicate an underlying altruism and a desire to make sure no one else is infected with HIV, said senior behavioral scientist David Kanouse. Promoting these feelings could then be used as a component of HIV prevention programs....Bein[...]

The below video is of a fire and brimstone Christian group that believes god hates America and wants our troops to die as his way of spiting us for our acceptance of homosexuals. They have chosen to spread their gospel of hate by picketing the funerals of US soldiers. These lovely parents have taught all [...]

I'm looking at the front page of the NYT and glad to see the British hostages have been released, but can we talk about the clothes? The men have all been given gray suits (which they're wearing without ties), but the poor woman -- Kaye Turney -- must stand for all the news photography in something you'd be embarrassed to wear to the grocery store. And it's not so much the headscarf. I didn't want to talk about headscarves today. That was the subject yesterday. I mean I'm still getting traffic from this post on Mahablog, which copied one of the several points I had just made in a post that supported Nancy Pelosi wearing a headscarf. Mahablog nevertheless insulted me and linked not to my Pelosi post but to that old, irrelevant post about feminist bloggers posi[...]

This sort of thing is why I use my own limited skills to administer my sites. Freedom. At last. I can finally write what I want without some Mormon censoring me. In fact, if I hadn't switched tech teams I couldn't even use the graphic above. It's been a harrowing six weeks and it's all the General's fault. Actually it's not, but it all started with one little, measly link from the General. The trouble started with this post, "Malleable Contender," which was about Mitt Romney. In one portion about Mormonism I talked about it "not being a mainstream religion" and then linked to the General's post entitled "What Mitt Believes... (Volume 2),". Later in the day, during my radio show, I i[...]

Boing Boing: Prefab housing by Ikea Each apartment is made up of two of these units, which are simply moved into position by crane. Put on the roof and exterior wall cladding, plumb and wire it in, and it’s ready to live in. One such block can be put up in a day… (tags: capitalism culture development)

Mark at Ready Steady Blog points to a lengthy debate between Sam Harris and Andrew Sullivan at Beliefnet. Since I find both Harris and Sullivan generally unimpressive, and debate about the existence of God extremely tiresome, I wasn't planning on plowing through the thing any time soon. However, I got involved in a mini-exchange in the comments to Mark's post (based on the opening email in the debate from Harris, I said that Harris' definition of "reason" is problematic; another Richard said that Harris had not actually defined reason, but had attempted to define faith; I argued that his definition of faith implied a definition of reason; he said it didn't, and that Harris' use of reason was more expansive than I was giving him credit for), prompting me to[...]

I recently posted Come to church and win a car. The Pastor of Revolution Church, David Trotter, posted a thank you in the comments. It caused me to dig a little deeper. I guess Trotter thinks any publicity is good publicity. He should read my blog. I found this video of local press coverage for the car give away on YouTube. Pastor David Trotter (blog) has been kind enough to post it. Trotter words are enthusiastic, he believes in what his is doing. Check out what he has to say. I think he's whacked. Here is why. The rational of giving an extravagant gift meant to emulate the gift God gave of his son to humanity (Trotters rational), smacks of crass commercialism, and worst of all, it sounds like a lie. Like something made up to explain why a pastor would tr[...]
