In honor of April Fools Day, here’s a list of foolish and foolhardy actions that are a foolproof way to make getting through airport security as painfully slow as possible: Wear metal studded pants. You can’t take them off and put them through the metal detector, so they’re going to have to wand you. What were [...]

There are many things to be said about the Philippines. If I so choose, I can focus on the bad and ugly, but you already know what these are. No one is naive enough to think there is no poverty or frustration in the country. And all through my stay, I could see it everywhere. But [...]

Take a look at this video my parents took in Florida: Are they off to auditions for Hitchcock’s Birds 2 or what?

March 31st is the 118th anniversary of the inauguration of the Eiffel Tower, and boy do I wish I was there to celebrate! Located beside the River Seine in Paris, France, the Eiffel Tower is the tallest building in the city. Following its completion in 1889, it was the tallest structure in the world, and remained [...]

It's been a long week, and while a lot of good stuff has happened, I'm very tired and feeling a bit down, probably simply because of fatigue. So, resorting to one of my favorite anti-depressant techniques -- spending lots of money at once! -- I've gone about acquiring various treats. From most to least indulgent, they are:* Corrective Barracuda swim goggles. Gary and I were so pleased with the optical snorkeling masks we used in Maui that I went ahead and ordered some optical swim goggles for myself. On the face of it, this is very silly: I don't really need to see anything in the pool, y'know? Furthermore, I could have gotten them for much less than I did. I've been wearing inexpensive, non-correcting goggles, which have worked fine, and I could have [...]

It looks like you don’t want cell phones to be used on the planes. The FAA seems to agree with you, and has withdrawn its previous support of the change. Do you think cell phone use should be allowed during flight? Yes, absolutely No, never, not a chance Maybe, with certain restriction Undecided View Results Thanks to those who voted. Look for [...]

I’m in Austin for UT’s Symposium on Online Journalism. It looks like this town has as many tattoo parlors on every corner as other cities have Starbucks. I tried to convince the leading lights of online journalism to leave the bar last night and go get tatts. Perhaps a nice Google logo. No sale. I [...]

The city of Portland has as sordid an underground history as my home city of Seattle does, and, like Seattle, it makes for a fun walking tour. There were plenty of nefarious deeds going on above ground, but the underground was where the really fun stuff was happening. In the subterranean world of Chinatown, you can [...]
