Hungarian Notation & The Intl. Space Station

Blogged From at 09. Apr 2007 13:05 under Object, Object, Object, Object

Charles Simonyi of Microsoft Word fame is now orbiting the earth in the Intl. Space Station; he launched on April 7th 2007 on board a Soyuz TMA-10.Think of Mr. Simonyi next time you see szStreetName, iNumrecs, or pMyStruct. That's Hungarian Notation (which he developed) for my fellow coding nerds. ;-)BBC NEWS - American space 'nerd' blasts off: "A US software engineer has become the fifth space tourist after blasting off on board a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.Billionaire Charles Simonyi, 58, who led development of Microsoft's Word, lifted off from the Baikonur space station in Kazakhstan at 1731 GMT.He is the 450th person to enter orbit and the $25m ride makes him, by his own admission, 'the first nerd in space'."Technorati Tags:Microsoft +Word NASA Internatio[...]

Comment on Disable User Account Control (UAC) in Windows Vista by Robert Irizarry

Blogged From at 08. Apr 2007 12:16

Vista may be the most secure but its also the most annoying. The "security" features are just overbearing to deal with at times and Madhur I've seen the file deletion issues as well. They occurred under XP as well but at least I could turn to the application Unlocker to release the file. Last I checked Unlocker did not work with Vista. See Linux and the Mac for far better security implementations from the user perspective. BTW, this is coming from a Windows guy.

Microsoft is Dead? More Like Obsolesced

Blogged From at 08. Apr 2007 00:45 under Object, Object

Paul Graham offers an interesting essay on why Microsoft is Dead. Not dead as in buried, only to return as a zombie. Rather, dead in the McLuhan sense of obsolesced – no longer the dominant structuring force in the software industry. I disagree with Graham’s assessment that web-based desktop applications have killed Microsoft; on the other hand, I think that his comment about the combination of Apple’s OSX and Microsoft Vista weighs heavily against the Redmond giant. Microsoft’s history parallels that of IBM as I describe in my talk, How to Determine the Business You’re Really In, from a few years ago. Microsoft reached the pinnacle of its power, and then hit a nexus point - its strategic decline (despite the fact that it is rolling in cash, a resu[...]

Google wants MORE of your identity!

Blogged From at 07. Apr 2007 06:18

Ok ... this is one place where I like Local.Live.com even more than Google Maps ... again! I was long a user of Google Maps, however they didn't allow me to mark-up the maps and add my own annotations. Yes ... I could hack code, but c'mon ... Local.Live.com has had the ability for a long time.Well FINALLY, Google adds the ability to annotate and more through their new My Maps features ... BUT ... I MUST create an account and be tracked by Google in order to use the features!! What the heck? I can't just hack out a quick annotated map for a friend or family without providing information to Google about who I am and having them permanently note my interest in some specific point on earth?Once again ... the average person has NO idea they are now going to[...]

Microsoft is dead.

Blogged From at 07. Apr 2007 06:07

Hey, I'm just repeating what Paul Graham said:A few days ago I suddenly realized Microsoft was dead. I was talking to a young startup founder about how Google was different from Yahoo. I said that Yahoo had been warped from the start by their fear of Microsoft. That was why they'd positioned themselves as a "media company" instead of a technology company. Then I looked at his face and realized he didn't understand. It was as if I'd told him how much girls liked Barry Manilow in the mid 80s. Barry who? Microsoft? He didn't say anything, but I could tell he didn't quite believe anyone would be frightened of them. Microsoft used to be a great company. They were successful by focusing on a couple of products, and by crushing anyone they considered to [...]

Bungie Weekly Update 4/6

Quotes: -”The first fusion core was pretty, but lacked the necessary warning signage seen in the new, improved Halo 3 Fusion Core. The new improved Fusion Core will become important in strange, secret ways in Fall 2007. Consider yourself warned.” -”Audio has seen some noticeable improvements too. Honestly, it’s sounded about perfect for months, but they just [...]
