As I wrote here yesterday, I was the guest of the Kerry’s on Wednesday, for the taping of their interview on the Tavis Smiley Show which aired last night on KCET in Los Angeles. I took notes while the show was taping, but had been asked not to blog about the show until it aired. [...]

Educational software, a $2 billion-a-year industry that has become the darling of school systems across the country, has no significant impact on student performance, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Education. Source: washingtonpost.com I have to admit that I am really not all that surprised by these findings. I have always been [...]

I found this article–wait, I'm getting ahead of myself. Here are the Detroit Public Schools results for the 2002 Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP): Reading Test Takers Reading SAT Pct Reading MOD Pct Reading LOW Pct 13797 32.20% 27.00% 40.80% I have no idea how these scores map onto NAEP scores (if it's provided on the site, they've hidden it well), but it seems [...]

Throw this one in the What the #$%*? file, it seems that Michigan House Democrats have passed an earmark that would provide every school aged child with an iPod: Facing a budget deficit that has passed the $1 billion mark, House Democrats Thursday offered a spending plan that would buy a MP3 player or iPod for [...]

Home School Mothers: the Beatrice Brigade Home school mothers are the heart of a traditionalist revolution that is driving life back into the homes. To these women, and the men blessed to be married to them, homes are no longer assets or places to share a microwave dinner at the end of an exhausting day [...]

We're experiencing a typical yet never expected April freeze here; the weather report says it's an Arctic freeze. In Indiana, the weather can change before you can tap your shoes three times and chant "There's no place like home. . . ." but this freeze thing is ridiculous. On Monday, it was balmy and breezy and in the eighties. On Tuesday the skies split open and water poured down like Niagara Falls. It didn't rain; rain has individual droplets. It came down as one huge wide soaking-wet strand: it reminded me of that horrible spittoon joke that has made me seriously sick since third grade when I first heard it and it had to be explained in detail to me because I had never heard of a spittoon before. I'd repeat the joke here for you but I just ate.I'm kee[...]

I don't mean to be TOO cynical...Though Greenwich’s population of 61,000 is 90 percent white, according to the census, nearly a quarter of the public school system’s 8,800 students are black, Hispanic or Asian. Yet their representation in many elementary and middle schools is lopsided. Still, Connecticut's school superintendant is doing the right thing.Few parents are openly criticizing the goal of diversity, but a group calling itself Concerned Citizens of Greenwich has run full-page advertisements in local newspapers asking that neighborhood schools not be made to suffer in the rush to bolster other schools. Dr. Sternberg said she had received a flood of e-mail messages, including many that took a “hateful, bullying tone. In a recen[...]
